Orissa is located on the east coast of India. It is the ninth largest state in area which is proved by the state maps of Orissa and the eleventh largest in population.
The history of this state was that it was invaded by the Mauryan emperor named Ashoka in 261 BC. Orissa is the modern name of the ancient kingdom Kalinga.
After the Kalinga War in 261 BC Emperor Ashoka got attracted to the teachings of Buddha and practiced non-violence.
Tourists’ attractions – Orissa has several popular tourist destinations. Puri with the Jagannath temple near the sea, Konark, with the Sun Temple, are visited by thousands of tourists every year. The Jagannath Temple of Puri, The Lingaraja Temple of Bhubaneshwar, The Sun Temple of Konark, and the Barabati Fort of Katak are important archaeological monuments in Indian history.
The famous dam in this place is the Hirakud dam the longest dam in the world, built across the Mahanadi River. It stands approximately 15 km from Sambalpur, which is shown on the Orissa maps. It was the first major river valley project of the post independence period of India. This huge project was started in March 1946 and came to an end by 1953 which was formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru on the 13th January 1957.
The total length of the dam is around 4.8 km spanning between the hills Lamdungri on the left and Chandili Dunguri on the right.
